The «Architectural Heritage - Russian Manor Endowment Fund» was established for the restoration of the Sukhanovo manor

In 2013, the issue of the need for speedy rescuing the Sukhanovo manor – a beautiful estate previously owned by the Volkonsky princes - became particularly acute. The ancient manor once belonging to an old aristocratic family of the Volkonsky princes was significantly destroyed; during the Soviet era, the building was reconstructed, original interiors were lost and the building architecture was modified.

By the end of the XX century, the manor was in full decline and needed for immediate restoration. In order to save the manor near Moscow, the «Architectural Heritage –Russian Manor Endowment Fund» was established in 2015. It is symbolic that protection of the estate, which is currently run by the RF Union of Architects, was provided by a team of famous modern architects - the Union of Architects members, descendants of the estate owners, journalists, art experts and talented managers. Creating an organization engaged in the donation collection for the Sukhanovo restoration, they abandoned the usual concept of charity fund in favor of the specialized endowment management fund, the purpose of which was to accumulate funds for the restoration works in the Sukhanovo and Talyzin manors. In contrast to the charity fund, the endowment fund does not use the collected donations, but capitalizes them carrying out projects due to the income earned. This mechanism allows creating «eternal» capital, which is the best for the purpose of historical heritage preservation for future generations.

What famous persons participate in the Fund? What is the essential difference between this organization and other charities? Who is its leader? Answers to these and other questions can be found in my material on the «Architectural Heritage – Russian Manor Endowment Fund».

In 2013, discussions about saving Sukhanovo, the beautiful manor of the Volkonsky princes, were particularly acute. The old manor, in the territory of which currently there is the RF Union of Architects Creativity House, needs a prompt restoration. Then, it was decided to establish the Endowment Fund to save Russian estates. Reviving of the architectural treasure possessed by the RF Union of Architects was started by its members - known modern architects, art historians, talented managers and public figures, whose names were known to many Muscovites. Currently, the «Architectural Heritage – Russian Manor Endowment Fund» is supported by:

He has many years of experience at the position oftop manager in large Russian and foreign companies, specialist in investment projects.

"In the spring of 2013, prince Oleg Valentinovich Volkonsky invited me to visit the Sukhanovo manor and see the difficult situation around their family estate. Due to objective reasons associated with the termination of financing for the federal importance architectural monument Sukhanovo manor in 1990s and uncertain situation concerning the operational management agreement between the RF Federal Property Management Agency and the RF Union of Architects, led the prosperous and popular amongcreative intellectuals estate (architects’ Creativity House) to the state of desolation and oblivion. In this situation, the RF Union of Architects took active steps to preserve the unique architectural monument;due to the RF Union of Architects honorary president Yury Petrovich Gnedovsky, all the attempts to seize and completely plunderthe estate were beaten off under the conditionsof uncertain legal status of the manor and lack of financial support by the main owner - the RF Federal Property Management Agency. Unfortunately, the forces were not enough to save the land around the estate; the land previously owned by the manor waslooted and sold for cottage construction in the hard times of 1990s. Returning to the endowment fund creation,it is difficult to imagine investor attraction to direct investments in the Sukhanovo manor under this legal uncertainty and amount of restoration works.

Any discussion on this subject endswhen it comes to the issues of the manor ownership and investment dividend reception by foreign and Russian investors. Searching for a way out of this seemingly unsolvable problem, wehave met with the founder and organizer of endowment funds, social investments in the Gazprombank and Russian non-commercial organization market Lyudmila Yuryevna Panteleeva. Detailed and professional answers to all questions raised by me about the endowment fundspushed me to the creation of the endowment fund for our project. In this regard, I decided to create the endowment fund as the most transparent and understandable structure for foreign and Russian art patrons and philanthropists;it was to bring together all the people interested in the revival and preservation of cultural and historical heritage of Russian manors and the Sukhanovo manor in particular. Prince Oleg Valentinovich Volkonsky gave his consent; further, it was necessary to convince the RF Union of Architects management of the endowment fundestablishment idea correctness. In January 2014, at the meeting of the RF Union of Architects Board participated by the RF Union of Architects President Andrey Vladimirovich Bokov and respected members of the Board,I have introduced the concept of creation and the whole mechanism of the «Architectural Heritage – Russian Manor Endowment Fund» with presentation slides. Everything new always takes time to reflect on, and it was the same in our case.

The RF Union of Architects needed time to decide on my proposal and their possible participation in the project. I can only note that during my speech on the Endowment Fundcreation, in addition to the RF Union of Architects President Andrey Vladimirovich Bokov and its vice president, director of the Architects’ Creativity House Alexandr IvanovichKoshevoy, the most sincerely interested person in resolving the issue of Sukhanovo manor revival among all the present Board members was the RF Union of Architects honorary president Yury Petrovich Gnedovsky. During the pause in deciding on the possible RF Union of Architects participation in the «ArchitecturalHeritage-RussianManorEndowmentFund»,I have got full understanding and support of this project by the Director of the A. V. Schusev Architecture Museum Irina Mikhailovna Korobina, who also tried to draw attention to the hard fate of the Sukhanovo manor together with Yury Petrovich Gnedovsky. It was described in their joint documentary film, in which we can see documented traces of the barbaric attitude to the history and culture of our country by people trying to privatize the federal importance architectural monument Sukhanovo manor; seeing them became possible after the formal control returning (legally,we managed to let the RF Union of Architects rent the manor for free for 49 years;it happened only in the summer of 2016 at the meeting of the Russian President Vladimir Putin and the RF Union of Architects President A. V. Bokov). The estate was returnedinthe plundered state, windows were shattered, all the furniture and interior elements were stolen, piles of garbage lay in the halls and rooms –such scenes can only be seen in the pictures of war.

Since the activities of the «Architectural Heritage – Russian Manor Endowment Fund» were planned to be broader than just the Sukhanovo manor revival, we also offered participation in this project to the Museum of Architecture (Talyzin manor) and personally to Irina Mikhailovna Korobina, who later became a member of the Fund Assembly.

In December 2014, we have organized a classical music concert held in the Main Palace of the manor and participated by the professor of Gnesiny music school, representative of ancient noble family Olga Valerievna Rumyantseva and her students; guests of honor included the prince Oleg Valentinovich Volkonsky and the RF Union of Architects honorary president Yury Petrovich Gnedovsky. Before the concert, a prayer service was held at the Cathedral of the Volkonsky princes in front of the myrrh-streaming icon of the martyr Nicholas II brought to the estate by the advisor of the Metropolitan of Eastern America and New York Ilarion Igor Yevgenievich Smykov. In their welcome speeches at the beginning of the concert and upon its completion, Yury Petrovich Gnedovsky and prince Oleg Valentinovich Volkonsky recalled the history of the estate in different periods of Russia’s development and expressed their sincere concern about the today's fate of the Sukhanovo manor. After the concert, we agreed to meet again with Yury Petrovich Gnedovsky and discuss the participation of the RF Union of Architects in the Fund creation.

The next meeting with Yury Petrovich Gnedovsky took place in January 2015 at the A. V. Schusev Museum of Architecture; it was also participated by the Museum of Architecture director Irina Mikhailovna Korobina. At the meeting, I spoke once again on the plans of the manor restoration, about the benefits of the Endowment Fundlegal form for patrons, philanthropists and investors, both Russian and foreign ones, in comparison with usual charities. At the end, it was decided on the meeting in the RF Union of Architects in the near future. This meeting took place in February 2015;it was attended by Yury Petrovich Gnedovsky, Igor Yuryevich Nikolsky and the vice-president, director of the Creativity House Alexandr Ivanovich Koshevoy. The result of this meeting was an agreement on the preparation of the final general meeting on the establishment of the Endowment Fund with the participation of the RF Union of Architects President Andrey Vladimirovich Bokov. Due to various circumstances, such a meeting took place only in April 2015; from the RF Union of Architects, it was participated by Andrey Vladimirovich Bokov, Yury Petrovich Gnedovsky and Alexandr Ivanovich Koshevoy; from the Fund, it was participated by prince Oleg Valentinovich Volkonsky and Igor Yuryevich Nikolsky. At this meeting, the final decision was made on the RF Union of Architects participation in the «Architectural Heritage – Russian Manor Endowment Fund» and its provision with a legal/physical address of Granatny lane, 12. From that moment, our efforts to revive the Sukhanovo manor became united. Then I started talking on the participation and formation of the Fund’sBoard of Trustees and Assembly;in summer and autumn,we had meetings with potential participants in these bodies of our Fund management. The result of this work was formationof the Fund’s Board of Trustees and Assembly. «Architectural Heritage – Russian Manor Endowment Fund» was legally registered in December 2015, official documents on the Fund registration were received at the end of January 2016 from the Ministry of Justice. Currently, I am working on creation and contentof our Fund’s site and organization of foreign representative offices in Monaco, Switzerland and Germany. I am sure that the plan of activities to collect funds for the Fund and organizational activities for its creation will be fully completed before the end of 2016, - Igor Yuryevich Nikolsky tells the story of the Fund creation.

The main innovation of the «Architectural Heritage – Russian Manor Endowment Fund» organizational system is the following: the organization is one of the few Russian supporters for so-called "European" fund type. What is its peculiarity?

The Fund works exclusively with the endowment. Its targeting is formed by the philanthropists and patrons themselves. For example, if the benefactor expresses the wish to give money to restore the arbor rotundas in the Sukhanovo manor - it means that this money cannot be spent for any landscaping works or house repair. Only for the arbors.

According to the law, the incoming benefactors’ funds should be transferred to the Fund’s management company within two months and permanently be at the management company’s disposal. For its projects, the Fund has the right to use only themoney earnedby the management company with the endowment. Thus, the Fund creates long-term financing of its projects and own financial independence. The lifetime of the Fund is indefinite.

The Endowment Fund does not carry out any paid work and cannot make remuneration payments to the members of the Board of Trustees and the Assembly for the performance of their assigned functions. The Endowment Fundhas no purpose of making profit and does not distribute profits among the founders. The Fund creates endowment for the benefit of non-profit projects in the fields of culture, arts, education, science, sports, archives. The founders may not use the Fund’s assets for their own purposes. The legal form of the Endowment Fund does not provide any shares for the founders. The property owner is the Fund;no single founder of the Fund has any ownership for the property owned by the Fund.

All projects should receive prior approval of the Board of Trustees.

It eliminates any possibility of fund misuse and corruption in the Endowment Fund. The Fund signs a donation agreement in the approved form with every philanthropist and patron. Since the beginning of its activities, the Fund is to provide the public, philanthropists and patrons with detailed reports on the restoration project implementation and the targeted use of donations. It is also monitored by the RF Ministry of Justice and the Endowment Fund Inspector.

Currently, 3 000 000 rubles are left to collect for the endowment formation. After the stated amount of donations for the endowment formation is received it will be transferred to the professional management company, which has significant experience in managing such assets. On the resulting income the «Architectural Heritage – Russian Manor Endowment Fund» will begin to actively implement its projects in the Sukhanovo manor and other Russian estates.
