Patronage of Arts and Philanthropy in Russia
By 1902, in the Russian Empire, there were 11 040 charities functioning, and 19 108 parish boards of trustees were in operation. Indeed, there were many destitute people in Russia; however, each one of them received help and support from the wealthy. Many Russian charities had their own Honorable Distinctions. To tell the truth, their originality matched that of the military decorations. To become a part of the charity was considered a great honor. But of course, it was not bravado with its honorable distinctions that attracted the haves to join the ranks of the philanthropists and patrons of arts. Let’s take I. I. Betskoy, for instance, the son of “the last boyar” General Field Marshal Trubetskoy and Baroness Wrede. He received education in Paris and devoted his entire life to the morale building activities in Russia.
In St. Petersburg, thanks to Betskoy ability, upon the project of the architect Stasov, the Smolny Institute of the Noble Maidens was established.
During the reign of Emperor Alexander I, Duke P. G. of Oldenburg was conspicuous in the field of the professional charity activities: he committed 42 years of his life to serving the disadvantaged people. In St. Petersburg, he founded the School of Jurisprudence and the first night orphanage. Peter Georgievich spent more than one million rubles on charity. In 1889, on the Liteyny avenue, a monument was raised in his honor that read, “To the enlightened philanthropist.”
It is not difficult to guess when the monument was demolished…ARCHMANORFUND Friends Club offers the extended privileges for the Friends of the “ARCHITECURAL HERITAGE – RUSSIAN MANOR” Fund
